One of my favourite walks from the village takes us along Cow Lane, so called as in the past this track was used by the local farmer to take his cows for milking; that farm & the dairy halt on the railway are now long gone, but the name has remained
Today the bare branches of the oak tree were silhouetted against a typically grey December sky; no rain was threatening our walk & there was the occasional glimpse of blue beyond the cloud cover. For once, at this time of year, the lane wasn’t too muddy either!
Once over the railway bridge we drop down onto the path which runs alongside the tracks; there’s always a lot to see along here if you look hard enough – not just the high-speed trains which we love waving to, hoping for a toot from the driver!
Tall bare flower stems of Rosebay Willowherb, so prevalent alongside many railway lines
Vibrant red Rosehips providing much needed food for Blackbirds, Thrushes, & the many Fieldfares which can be seen in this area throughout Winter
And the dramatic architecture of the now dried Cow Parsley seed heads – follow #lovelydeadcrap on Instagram for more pictures of these amazing plants
The path eventually moves away from the railway, across a crop field before climbing up on to the old railway line, peaceful, overgrown, reclaimed by nature & wildlife, but distinctly showing its heritage – lovely, no matter the season
